New mothers often struggle with trying to find out why their baby is crying. Crying is your baby's way of telling you that something is wrong and that they want your attention. Babies communicate, hunger, sleepiness and that they want someone to hold them or burp them through crying. The first thing that will make your baby cry is hunger, babies will start moving their tongues around and smacking their lips, create sucking noises with their mouth, babies may also be seen sucking fingers or a blanket to communicate a need to be fed.
Sometimes we as adults get overly exhausted and we may be restless and find it hard to go to sleep. The same thing happens to babies, when they get overly tired they begin to fuss and sometimes cry. Some babies are very curious about their environment and are so busy absorbing everything they don't want to fall asleep but then they become too tired and can't sleep and the crankiness and crying sets in.
Babies may also cry because they crave affection they like to be near their parents and want to be cuddled and held. If you had been reading to your child from they were in the womb you might find that one of the books you use to read will quickly calm your baby down as they recognizes it afterbirth.
Sometimes they just want to be picked up and held by someone they love and who loves them, this will soothe them and take away the crankiness. If mom and dad have been reading to the child before birth, they might find that the baby is very responsive to the story and becomes extremely calm when it is read to them.
Children who are breast fed by their mothers often have a much lower chance of getting colic. Babies with colic need to be taken to a pediatrician before being given any over the counter preparations for colic. Babies may also cry because they want to be burped as they often take in air when they breast or bottle feed, this gets into their tummy, interestingly, some babies may get fussy when they aren't burped and others don't need to be burped at all.
