Making Teeter Totters At Home

By Janelle Burnett

Teeter totters or other words known as seesaws, are one of the most fun things that a child will play with when he is still young. Everyone has probably experienced playing with a seesaw in the school or park playground during their childhood. So for parents who would want to give their kids the same experience, here is a simple way to build something like this.

Now when one wants to build a see saw, he will be needing a number of materials to help him getting started. He will be needing some lumber, a drill, a hammer, some screws, and a metal pipe. When all of the equipment have been laid down on the ground, he must now create a blue print or create the design on a piece of paper first.

After creating the initial design and plan, the next part would be to cut up the pieces of wood and think of how big the seesaw should be. Now the wood should be split into three parts which are the two foundations and of course the main plank. The best shape for the foundations to be in would actually be a triangle because triangles tend to be able to hold the ground better than other shapes.

In order to start building the seesaw, one must first drill a hole in the middle part of the large plank and another hole in the upper middle part of the foundations. Take note that the holes have to have the same size as the metal pipe because it will be going inside the hole. After that, pop the metal pipe into the holes that were just drilled and use bolts to screw the planks into place.

When that is done, one must also see to it that the two triangle planks are stuck to the ground otherwise it will just fall apart. In order to do this, he must first mix some cement that can dry quick. After that, he must smear some of the mix on the planks and connect them to the ground so that when it dries, the seesaw is sturdy.

Once the seesaw has already been completed, the final part to put in would be the metal handles that are located on both sides of the big plank. Fortunately, metal handles can be bought at hardware stores nationwide. Once the metal handles are bought, just screw them into both sides of the main plank.

The last thing to do would be to check if everything is in proper order. Test the seesaw to see if it actually works the way that it is supposed to be. A final reminder would be to make sure that everything is screwed in tightly otherwise it will be extremely dangerous for children to play on it.

So as one can see, building teeter totters at home is actually a very simple task. However, one must always make sure to be extremely meticulous when building it because it will involve the safety of the child. If everything is in working order, then just sit back and watch the children play.
